Multigenerational living for the Sandwich Generation

Research
In response to the noticeable phenomenon of the Sandwich Generation—individuals simultaneously caring for their aging parents and raising their children—the project addresses the challenges posed by demographic changes in an aging society. This generation plays a crucial role as informal caregivers within the Dutch healthcare system, a significance accentuated by a shortage of professional caregivers and a diminishing presence of nursing homes.
The burden of caregiving, however, has a notable impact on both the health and quality of life of caregivers and the elderly. Recognizing this, the project focuses on the integration of care concepts from both Taiwan and the Netherlands, drawing insights from extensive research, interviews, and case studies. The proposed solution introduces a coresident model, allowing family members to live together while maintaining individual privacy.
Furthermore, the project aims to optimize the social support system by incorporating atriums and social amenities. This design promotes aging in place for residents with strong family bonds and close neighborhood relationships, contributing to an improved quality of life for both caregivers and the elderly.
